ASSISTANT / ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR ACTING

The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign is pleased to invite applications for a full time, Tenure Track Assistant/Associate Professor in Acting beginning August 2025.
We eagerly seek a forward-looking Assistant/Associate Professor in Acting committed to equitable and inclusive education and acting training for BFA and MFA Acting students to join our community of educators and professional theatre makers. The ideal candidate demonstrates an existing record or potential for a robust body of creative work/research in Acting and/or Directing. Additionally, the candidate shares a passion for mentoring a diverse student community. A successful candidate has a strong record of innovation in both performance and/or directing and in teaching, especially with an eye toward creating just, equitable, sustainable communities, with a sub-specialization in one or more of these areas: Queer Theatre, Physical Theatre, Black Acting Methods, Eastern/Asian-based Theatre, Stanislavski-based training, and Latine Acting Training.
Duties include a teaching load of two classes/semester in Acting as well as ongoing development of creative research and/or professional practice, service, and (as appropriate) coaching or directing in support of the departmental curriculum and mission. This position is a full-time, nine-month, tenure-system faculty appointment. The anticipated start date is August 2025.
Minimum Qualifications
- An MFA, PhD or equivalent terminal degree in Theatre or related field
- Teaching experience required
Preferred Qualifications
- Member of Actors' Equity Association, SAG-AFTRA (Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists), or Stage Directors and Choreographers Society
- Experience Directing in professional or university setting
- 2+ years teaching acting in a studio or higher education
- Evidence of potential to establish a program or research and/or creative activity commensurate with expectations for tenure and promotion at a Research I university. Appointment Information This is a 100% full-time Academic faculty position, appointed on a 12-month basis. The expected start date is as August 16, 2025. The salary range of employees currently holding equivalent position is $71,000 - $76,000 for Assistant professors and $84,000 - $86,000 for Associate professors. Final salary offered will be determined by an assessment of available market data, internal salary equity, candidate experience and qualifications, collective bargaining agreements, and budget constraints.

The Department of Theatre at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign includes 24 full time faculty members, 12 Krannert Center Design and Technical faculty members, 3 academic staff, 7 campus affiliated faculty members, 130 undergraduates and more than 60 graduate students. The department offers BFA and MFA programs in acting; theatre studies; and design, technology and management. There are also MA and PhD programs in theatre studies. The department and its production programs are housed in the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts, a state of the art, multi-venue facility that operates collaboratively within an artistic structure comprised of theatre, dance, music, opera, and professional touring performances. Theatre faculty members work closely with Krannert Center staff and the faculties of the Department of Dance and the School of Music's Lyric Theatre Program.
