The UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government is the nation's preeminent university-based hub for training, consulting, and impactful scholarship aimed at local and state government. Since 1931, the School's mission has been to improve the lives of North Carolinians through practical scholarship that empowers citizens and public officials to understand and enhance state and local government.
Each year the School offers over 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences tailored to cater to the diverse needs of more than 12,000 public officials, helping them navigate the complexities of public service.
In addition to our renowned training programs, the School operates a nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program, available both on campus and online. We cultivate the next generation of public servants, equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for impactful governance.
The School also supports a wide variety of entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives aimed at topics including public leadership, criminal justice, technology, environmental finance, and community development. These practical research and advisory centers raise the bar for what government can achieve across North Carolina.

Position Summary:

The School of Government seeks to recruit a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor who will specialize in local government management. The selected candidate will support the public management and leadership work of the School through teaching, scholarship, and service with a focus on local government management and officials. The selected candidate will serve as one of the School's primary contacts and instructors for local government managers, assistant managers, and department heads. Examples of public leadership work can be found at the School's Center for Public Leadership and Governance website.
This faculty line will advance the School of Government's commitment to applied and engaged scholarship, making a meaningful impact to both the scholarship and practice of local government management. The selected candidate will have an unparalleled opportunity for access and engagement with local government professionals. A selected candidate will develop, administer and instruct in a range of courses designed for both in-service professionals and pre-service MPA students. They will:
- be responsible for organizing the School's annual Essentials for Local Government Managers course; a course that provides new and aspiring local government managers a chance to explore and learn about local government management, administration, and leadership, preparing the next generation of managers to positively improve their communities;
- contribute to other existing local government trainings;
- develop new programs for municipal and county managers, assistant managers, and department leaders;
teach in the School's highly ranked Master's in Public Administration program.
The selected candidate will produce scholarship relating to local government management that will include high-quality peer-reviewed journal articles, local government management text, resources, and guides, SOG public management bulletins, and practical publications.
Faculty at the School of Government consistently engage with practitioners advancing their own knowledge and research while contributing to improving practice. The selected candidate will:
- be a main point of contact for North Carolina's local government managers and assistant/deputy managers;
- advise, assess, and develop targeted services to support effective local government leadership and management across the state;
- be active in both the International City/County Management Association and the North Carolina City/County Management Association by attending conferences, serving on committees, and generally developing a reputation as a trusted resource for local government managers.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Doctorate in public administration, political science, public policy, public affairs, or a related field. Commitment to public service, ability to work effectively with a broad base of local government managers and assistant/deputy managers and a record of, or demonstrated potential for, practically focused and engaged teaching, service, and scholarship.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

An understanding of how local governments operate, including the roles and responsibilities of administrators and elected officials. Demonstrated ability to provide direct support to local government leaders and to pursue rigorous research to advance the field of public administration.
