Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

As the largest university-based local government training, advisory, and research organization in the United States, the UNC-Chapel Hill School of Government offers more than 200 courses, webinars, and specialized conferences for more than 12,000 public officials each year. Established as the Institute of Government in 1931, the School of Government's mission is to improve the lives of North Carolinians by engaging in practical scholarship that helps public officials understand and improve state and local government.

The School offers a nationally ranked Master of Public Administration program - on campus and online - to prepare public service leaders. The School is also home to entrepreneurial and innovative initiatives that research, advise, and train in areas including public leadership, judicial education, technology, environmental finance, and development finance, among others.

Position Summary:

The School of Government seeks to recruit a tenure-track faculty member at the rank of assistant or associate professor who will specialize in public sector leadership and public management. The selected candidate will support the leadership work of the School through teaching, scholarship, and service working with both appointed and elected officials at the local and state level, through the School's Center for Public Leadership and Governance.
This position will contribute to the School's mission of applied scholarship that makes a meaningful impact through scholarship and practice focused on local and state government leadership and management. The selected candidate will develop, administer, and instruct in a range of courses designed for elected and appointed leaders. In addition, they are expected to teach and engage with the School's highly ranked Master of Public Administration program and will:

be responsible for organizing new leadership programs for local and state government staff, management, and elected officials;
contribute to existing local and state government trainings;
*and provide consulting services to local governments that may include strategic planning, advising, and manager evaluation assistance.
The selected candidate will produce scholarship relating to public leadership that will include high-quality peer-reviewed journal articles; government management texts, resources, and guides; the School of Government's public management bulletins; and practical publications.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Doctorate in public administration, political science, public policy, public affairs, or a related field. Areas of expertise may include organization theory, leadership, change management, strategic planning, and board-manager relations. Commitment to public service and a record of or demonstrated potential for, practically focused and engaged teaching, service, and scholarship. Ability to work effectively with diverse audiences.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

An understanding of how state and local governments operate, including the roles and responsibilities of administrators and elected officials. Demonstrated ability to provide direct support to government leaders and to pursue rigorous research.
