The Department of Spanish and Portuguese at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications for a full-time tenure stream Assistant or Associate Professor position in Latin American literatures and cultures. The ideal candidate will show evidence of a well-defined research agenda focusing on the literary and cultural production of Afro-Hispanic or Indigenous populations of the Hispanophone Caribbean or other Latin American regions, with emphasis on the 19th to 21st centuries. Preference will be given to candidates whose research also focuses on one or more of the following areas: race and indigeneity, environment and society, or equality and social justice. Successful candidates are expected to teach effectively at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, establish and maintain an active and independent research program, and provide service to the department, the university and the profession.

A Ph.D. in Spanish or related field is required by June 20, 2025 for a preferred start date of August 16, 2025. Professional level proficiency in Spanish and English is required. Proficiency in Portuguese is a plus. Candidates should provide evidence of teaching effectiveness and a firm commitment to student mentorship and curricular innovation. Applicants must have a record of publication indicative of an associate professor or evidence of a promising research agenda indicative of an assistant professor appropriate to a research university.

  • two sample publications and/or dissertation chapters,
  • evidence of teaching effectiveness (statistical summaries for two courses preferred),
  • a contributions to inclusive excellence activities statement detailing how your teaching, service and/or scholarship has contributed to the success of all students, including those from racial, ethnic, and gender backgrounds that are underrepresented in the academic field. To ensure full consideration, all required materials must be submitted by 6pm CST on October 11, 2024. The target starting date of appointment is August 16, 2025. The budgeted salary range for the position is $76-79,000 at the Assistant Professor level and $85-100,000 at the Associate Professor level, for a 9-month service basis.
