Engineering IT Shared Services at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for an Audio-Visual Engineer. We are the IT services provider for the nationally-ranked Grainger College of Engineering, providing services for teaching, research, and learning. The Audio-Visual Engineer designs, provisions, and commissions technically complex classroom AV systems. This role will perform independent operational decision making in a team context with regard to deployment, acquisition, purchasing, maintenance and support of critical AV systems. This role further serves as a planning and technical resource for colleagues, as well as an advisor to management on forward planning. This position reports to the Associate Director of IT Operations within the IT Operations division of Engineering IT Shared Services.

Duties and Responsibilities:

A/V System Support:
• Analyzing functional and performance issues associated with use of A/V technology, collaborate with peers on possible solutions and implement corrective actions in a timely manner.
• Managing deployment of systems for classroom technologies, such as projectors, screens, and lecture capture equipment.
• Managing deployment of systems for conference room technologies, such as projectors, displays, and video conferencing equipment.
• Managing deployment and technology maintenance of digital signage systems.
• Performing design reviews for in-house and departmental projects. Design audiovisual systems for classroom implementation.
• Programing audio Digital Signal Processors (DSPs) as needed for classroom and campus operation.

A/V Service Management:
• Researching and determine trends in A/V technology and integrate appropriately to ensure the College's excellence in instructional, conference, and collaboration spaces.
• Managing best practice processes for the regular maintenance, replacement, upgrade and standardization of A/V technology across the College.
• Coordinating documentation and training for units, individual users, and IT staff on the use of A/V technology.
• As needed, supervising student/hourly employees, including the assignment of tasks, performance management, etc.; may also serve as a mentor/coach to junior staff.
• Partnering with relevant 3rd party vendors to maintain, troubleshoot and participate in problem-solving AV hardware and software issues. Use technical skills to ensure system diagnostics, troubleshoot, and configure and route IP-based ethernet and fiber optic networks for digital signal distribution.

A/V Design and Project Management:
• Managing a diverse portfolio of multiple A/V projects, and ensure timely delivery of the end product.
• Designing standard A/V systems and services where practical and work to adapt such services to the unique needs of the unit where necessary
• Set up and operate video cameras, audio equipment, equipment layouts and wiring schematics, and manage troubleshooting of AV and networking equipment.

Organizational Support:
• Partnering with Engineering IT user support staff on the support of A/V technology and serve as their escalation path.
• Working with Engineering IT and departmental staff to provide A/V support for occasional high profile events, which may occur outside business hours.
• Acting as a technical and institutional resource for other AV Specialists, providing training and advice as needed.
• Interacting with various teams within Engineering IT Shared Services to ensure outstanding service delivery to the end-users.

Customer Service and Support:
• Promoting and delivering excellent customer service by responding to requests in person, on the phone, or via email in a timely, polite, and professional manner.
• Actively maintaining relationships with user community, proactively communicate relevant information, and stay informed of user's needs and initiatives.
• Consulting with units within the College on the design, purchase and installation of A/V technology for instructional, conference, and collaboration spaces.
• Setting and managing the expectations of customers; act as an advocate for Engineering clients in service planning and deployment across the organization; and resolve customer satisfaction issues.

Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Graduation or equivalent.
• Six (6) years of work experience in IT-related functions such as hardware/software support, programming, network design, network engineering, IT systems integration, or closely related field. College coursework which includes Information Technology (IT), IT Management, Programming, IT systems, or a closely related discipline may be substituted as follows:
- 30 semester hours equals one (1) year, Associate's Degree (60 semester hours) equals eighteen (18) months, 90 semester hours equals two (2) years, Bachelor's Degree (120 semester hours) equals three (3) years).
• Experience working in a customer service environment.
• Experience in troubleshooting common desktop and mobile computing applications and hardware.
• Experience with enterprise IT tools such as endpoint management, system imaging, and centralized configuration solutions.
• Experience with tools, concepts, and resources associated with project management and related activities.
• Experience with instructional or collaborative space design.
• Experience with protocols (like HDMI, DVI, SDI, AVOIP etc.) and industry standards (like HDR, HDCP etc.).
• Experience with AV equipment Theory of Operations and set-up.
• Experience with AV technologies and IT systems on a technical level.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Experience in technology at an institution of higher education or equivalent.
• Experience supporting and implementing video conferencing or presentation/lecture capture systems (Kaltura, Extron, etc.).
• Experience scripting or programing in at least one format or language (Extron, AMX, Crestron)
• Experience processing control, routing, and audio video signal flow with software.
• Industry recognized certification in audio-visual systems or project management (Info COMM CTS or PMI CAPM, etc.)

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

• Extensive knowledge of the systems and operations used within the areas and departments of responsibility.
• Extensive knowledge of networking services and network connectivity methods.
• Extensive knowledge of current technology and software for production and display of multimedia content (e.g. cameras, mixers, projectors, digital displays, microphones).
• Excellent customer service skills.
• Excellent oral and written communications skills.
• Ability to lead groups of peers in cross-functional groups assigned to tasks or project work.
• Ability to oversee and coordinate activities of user groups.
• Demonstrated Knowledge of network-based audio systems such as Dante Controller or Virtual Soundcard software.
• Demonstrated Ability to create audio-visual system designs.
• Ability to demonstrate fundamental knowledge of effective troubleshooting methodologies.
• Knowledge of A/V technology, setup, and coordination for large and/or remote events.
• Knowledge of enterprise endpoint management solutions, such as Microsoft MECM, Intune, Munki, Workspace ONE, etc.
• Knowledge of presentation/lecture capture systems (Kaltura, Extron, etc.).
• Extensive knowledge in at least one technical area relevant to the A/V service area. (Examples: Video conferencing, space design, room A/V technology, digital signage, classroom capture, etc.).
• Extensive knowledge of two or more common operating system platforms.
• Extensive knowledge in the application of IT security concepts.
• Knowledge of administering of Microsoft Active Directory, LDAP, or other directory service.
• Familiarity with designing and programming BSS London, Biamp, Extron or QSC audio digital signal processors.
• Demonstrated Experience working with large audiovisual projects.
• Knowledge of advanced test equipment used for installing, troubleshooting and commissioning professional audiovisual systems.
• Knowledge of professional audio-visual sub-systems such as lighting systems, electrical systems and signal management, control systems, computer systems and audio-visual networking.
• Knowledge of audio principles used to set up audio systems in classrooms and auditoriums.
• Ability to apply advanced troubleshooting techniques to resolve problems related to professional audiovisual systems.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time Civil Service Information Technology Technical Associate position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $77,000- $88,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. This position is primarily on-site, at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign campus, with the potential to do some hybrid work as needed per the University's Workplace Flexibility policy. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
