Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit:

Created in 2012, the Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs (CHEOP) office Comprises the NC Health Careers Access Program (NC-HCAP) and TRiO Programs (Upward Bound Program and the McNair Scholars Program). Through both NC-HCAP and TRiO Programs, CHEOP Promotes and Maintains Programs, Activities, and Services that Facilitate Access to College, Graduate and Ph.D. Programs, as well as Health Professional Schools for Individuals from Historically Underrepresented Racial and Ethnic Minority Groups, First Generation Status, Rural and/or Low- Income Backgrounds. The Programs under CHEOP Enhance Participants' Academic Performance, Retention, and Personal and Professional Development to Promote Graduation in Secondary and Post-Secondary Education.

Position Summary:

This position may be eligible for a hybrid work arrangement that may include a partially remote work location, consistent with System Office policy. UNC Chapel Hill employees are generally required to reside within a reasonable commuting distance of their assigned duty station.


The Carolina Higher Education Opportunities Program (CHEOP) Assistant Director will be dedicated to increasing educational opportunities for students (middle school through college) by providing programming, education, outreach and oversight for student access, success and engagement initiatives across a rich portfolio of programs to include, but not limited to Project Uplift, Uplift PLUS, and NC-HCAP Pre-College and College Initiatives. Additionally, the assistant director is charged with thinking creatively and innovatively to develop a strategic programmatic plan for CHEOP (i.e. Project Uplift, Uplift PLUS, and NC-HCAP Pre-College and College Initiatives,). Develop a strategic and innovative programmatic plan for the Carolina Higher Education Opportunity Programs (CHEOP) based on observable student needs, and departmental priorities utilizing college student development and intersectionality frameworks. Supporting the overall operation of CHEOP, the Assistant Director works collaboratively with the Senior Director and Co-Director concerning the strategic direction, curriculum, programs, and seminars; monitoring and assessing program effectiveness; partnering with various campus units to achieve the overall university mission and engaging alumni and friends as it relates to increasing networking and fundraising opportunities.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Experience in program development and implementation of curriculum, summer programming and academic and enrichment activities/events.An understanding of student cognitive, social, and emotional development and learning strategies at the primary post-secondary level.Strong oral, written, and intercultural communication skills.Ability to work independently, handle ambiguity, manage multiple projects, schedules and deadlines, as well as possess good interpersonal skills.Fluency with desktop applications such as the Microsoft Office Suite and familiarity with data management systems.

Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience:

Two to three years of experience related to student programming, engagement and development. Relevant experience and an understanding of student development (cognitively and non-cognitively). Applicants with a demonstrated commitment to working with students from disadvantaged backgrounds are particularly encouraged to apply. Bi-lingual (English/Spanish).

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities:

This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities.
