MINIMUM PAY RATE: $26.80 per hour

POSITION SUMMARY

Oversees the livestock judging program, including recruiting, instructing, and coaching of students. Assists faculty in increasing the use of the Animal Sciences Lab (ASL) at the Weitendorf Agriculture Education Center for additional industry activities and events. Collaborates with faculty to increase and implement greater opportunities for experiential-based learning through the ASL. Solicits animal science inputs to ensure the economic sustainability of the ASL. Supervises and assists with daily care and maintenance of the animals housed in the ASL. Organizes all tours and events at the ASL that generate positive support of JJC from the agricultural community.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES AND KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Oversee and coach the livestock judging program.

2. Develop and implement a recruitment program designed specifically for students interested in animal science, swine management and livestock judging including visiting high schools, career fairs, 4-H and FFA activities, and other youth activities.

3. Oversee and maintain budgets related to the livestock judging program.

4. Lead efforts to acquire supplemental funding to support the livestock judging program.

5. Properly train and supervise student workers working with animal related programs.

6. Assist agriculture faculty with planning, facilitating, and teaching laboratory activities related to the animal science and swine management curriculum.

7. Assist agriculture faculty to increase the use of the Weitendorf Center for demonstration and research emphasis on animal science and swine management.

8. Develop a plan for greater use of the Weitendorf facility for animal activities including shows, sales, and animal related educational programs.

9. Increase visibility of the Agriculture Programs by providing tours and disseminating information updates concerning activities with the livestock judging program and the Weitendorf Center.

10. Represent the department at Animal Science Industry/Affiliated Organization meetings.

11. Maintain the Livestock Judging portion of JJC website and provide content for program social media pages.

12. Foster use of the Weitendorf Center as an outreach and teaching tool for dual-credit programs and other area high schools. Perform related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

1. Bachelor's degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, or allied field.

2. Livestock judging team experience.

3. Experience in food animal production.

4. Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays.

5. Ability to handle a variety of tasks and responsibilities simultaneously and effectively; work independently and establish priorities

6. Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with other members of the college and community, displaying cultural competence as well as emotional intelligence.

7. Demonstrated commitment to the college's core values of respect and inclusion, sustainability, integrity, collaboration, humor and well-being, innovation and quality.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Master's degree in Agriculture, Animal Science, or allied field.

2. Experience coaching a collegiate livestock judging team.

3. Experience in planning and managing livestock events.

4. English and Spanish verbal and written communication proficiency.

5. Demonstrated multicultural competence.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

1. Lifting feed bags and other animal production equipment.

2. Ability to control and restrain food animals.

3. Ability to travel between campus locations and to and from judging and community events.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Some duties will be performed indoors such as computer use for data collection.

2. Other duties will be performed outdoors during labs and activities with animal events.
