Overview

Mass General Brigham Digital, in partnership with the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO), is seeking an experienced Data Engineer who has a passion for healthcare data and will thrive as a member of an experienced, high performing and highly motivated team. This person will have a desire to learn and a flexibility to adjust to the fast-changing analytic and reporting demands of our system. The best candidate has solid analytical and communication skills, and experience working with health care data.

Reporting to the Data Engineering Manager, the Data Engineer will be a member of a cross-functional team responsible for developing new clinical data products. The areas of focus include Quality, Safety, Health Equity, Community Health, Patient Experience, Provider Wellbeing, Credentialing, and Pharmacy and Formulary.

The ideal candidate will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to define and achieve strategic objectives. They will be responsible for developing the Quality Data Hub within our cloud-based data warehouse. They will collaborate closely with solutions architects, analytics engineers, and visualization developers to understand requirements, establish robust change management practices, and implement rigorous quality assurance measures. Additionally, the role involves proactive performance monitoring, troubleshooting data issues, and adhering to MGB Digital's standards and practices.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Works with cross-functional teams to understand functional product requirements and deliver on strategic data and analytics initiatives.
  • Design, build, test and maintain architectures within the 'Quality Data Hub' of our cloud-based enterprise data warehouse.
  • Build ETL/ELT ingestions for OCMO related data and handle related monitoring and support duties.
  • Accrues advanced knowledge of the OCMO product domains and can quickly apply development strategies to meet the stakeholder requirements for the data products.
  • Define and implement the processes and tooling through which enterprise curated data models are built and maintained.
  • Partners with solutions architects, analytics engineers, and data visualization developers to understand data extraction and transformation needs and builds a platform and related processes suited to them.
  • Develop and enforce change management and versioning processes for code promotion.
  • In collaboration with lead analytic staff, architect and enforce thorough quality assurance, testing and peer review procedures to ensure the accuracy, reliability, and validity of end products.
  • Helps identify potential bottlenecks within the development lifecycle and propose high-level strategies to overcome them.
  • Triage, troubleshoot and resolve data issues from end users and internal team members.
  • Follows MGB Digital guidelines and standard practices to leverage existing tools and methods to efficiently develop modeling solutions, ensure that work is not duplicated, and is appropriately transitioned between teams.

Skills/Abilities/Competencies
  • Ability to function effectively and independently in a fast-paced environment, organize and prioritize work independently, and meet tight deadlines.

  • Possess strong interpersonal skills to effectively communicate with cross functional teams including staff at all levels of the organization.

  • Knowledge of agile principles and experience working within an agile team is preferred.
  • Practical problem-solving abilities, i.e. the ability to formulate hypotheses, test options and move forward in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including strong customer service orientation and the ability to translate complex technical concepts to non-technical audiences.
  • Advanced SQL DML skills required, with comparable experience in writing data functions (e.g. TSQL procs, Snowflake UDFs, etc.).
Supervisory Responsibilities:

No direct reports; may indirectly provide leadership and guidance to less seasoned and new staff.

Fiscal Responsibility:

No direct budgetary responsibility.
Demonstrates fiscal responsibility by effectively using Mass General Brigham resources.

  • Possible local travel to Mass General Brigham sites
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit; talk; or hear; use hands to finger; handle; or feel; reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; and stoop; kneel; or crouch. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 5 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision and depth perception.
  • The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Normal office working conditions. The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or master's degree in computer science, informatics, statistics, or related field and an interest in healthcare and the use of technology to support clinical care.
  • 1-3 years of experience as an Analytics Engineer, Data Engineer, or similar role.
  • 1-3 years of experience in business intelligence/analytics, preferably working with healthcare data.
  • Experience working with cloud data platforms such as Snowflake, Azure Synapse, Amazon Redshift, etc.
  • Experience implementing scalable ETL/ELT pipelines.
  • Experience with transforming and modeling workflow tools, such as DBT or Informatica.
  • Proficiency in querying complex data structures using SQL is required.
  • Strong programming skills and proficient in other programming languages (e.g., SAS, R, and Python)
  • Experience with general source control principles and implementing CI/CD pipelines.
  • Working knowledge of traditional data warehousing and cloud data warehousing concepts.
  • Working knowledge of data visualization (Tableau) software a plus.
  • Proficiency or Certification in Epic Clarity / Caboodle data model a plus.
