Who We Are Looking For:
Every day, Cambia's dedicated Applied AI Team is living our mission to make health care easier and lives better. As the Head of Machine Learning on our team, you will play a crucial role in leading the team in understanding requirements, prototyping and building models, conducting experiments, and driving innovative solutions. Your passion for machine learning, Gen AI, and NLP, coupled with your curiosity and desire to keep learning, will be instrumental in advancing Cambia's data-driven initiatives. In collaboration with our ML Ops Engineers and our partner data engineering and software development teams, you will bring AI/ML solutions to production and maintain their health and integrity while in production. Your expertise in theoretical machine learning, coupled with your practical experience engineering AI/ML systems, will be instrumental in driving the success of Cambia's AI strategy and initiatives - all in service of making our members' health journeys easier.

What You Bring to Cambia:
PREFERRED KEY EXPERIENCE:

  • Streamlining prior authorization and appeal reviews using GenAI and NLP.
  • Personalizing member engagement to promote the health and well-being of our members.
  • Identifying members at risk for certain conditions to offer them opportunities for high-value care.

Qualifications and Certifications:
  • Academic Background: Bachelor's degree (masters or PhD preferred) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field.
  • Technical Leadership: Proven experience leading technical teams and managing projects related to NLP, with a track record of delivering high-impact projects and driving business outcomes.
  • Natural Language Processing: Minimum of 3 years of professional experience in NLP, with a strong background in machine learning, deep learning, and text processing.

Skills and Attributes (Not limited to):
  • Generative AI and Large Language Models: Understanding and experience working with foundation models and generative AI. Experience using different frameworks and libraries including but not limited to huggingface, Langchain, Llamaindex, vector databases.
  • Machine Learning: Strong mathematical foundation and understanding of the concepts underlying classic machine learning, deep learning, statistical modeling, and data analysis. Expert-level familiarity with common machine learning frameworks and libraries such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, scikit-learn, XGBoost, etc.
  • Model Development & Evaluation: Experience in and deep intuition for applying ML techniques and approaches to solve problems. Strong foundation in model evaluation, including metric development and selection.
  • Software Development Skills: Solid understanding of software engineering principles, data structures, and algorithms. Expert-level proficiency in Python. Proficient in SQL.
  • ML Production Systems: Experience deploying ML models in production systems. Exposure to containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP). Strong grounding in model monitoring and MLOps.
  • Data preprocessing and analysis: Understanding of how to structure machine learning pipelines. Familiarity with data preprocessing techniques and tools. Experience with SQL and/or python data processing libraries (e.g., Pandas, NumPy).
  • Analytical Mindset: Strong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities to contribute to data analysis and experimental evaluations. Attention to detail and an eagerness to learn from experimental results.
  • Communication & Teamwork: Good communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Willingness to collaborate and learn with team members.
  • Continuous Learning: Passion for staying up-to-date with the latest advancements in machine learning and data engineering. Proactive in learning new tools, techniques, and frameworks to drive innovation.
  • Leadership: Strong leadership, coaching, and mentorship abilities. Ability to inspire and motivate team members towards achieving goals and delivering high-quality results.
  • Healthcare Knowledge: Previous experience is extremely helpful but not required.

What You Will Do at Cambia (Not limited to):
  • Team Management: Leads and manages a team of Machine Learning Scientists, fostering a collaborative and inclusive team culture that encourages innovation, growth, and continuous learning.
  • ML, NLP & Gen AI Expertise: Oversees the development and deployment of ML, NLP and Gen AI models & pipelines, ensuring that they meet business requirements and are technically sound.
  • Project Planning and Execution: Oversees the planning and execution of AI projects, ensuring successful delivery and business outcomes. Collaborates with stakeholders to define project requirements, develop project plans, and ensure effective resource allocation.
  • Technical Oversight: Provides technical oversight and guidance on AI projects. Reviews and approves technical designs, prototypes, and models.
  • Stakeholder Management: Communicates technical results and insights to non-technical stakeholders, including executives, product managers, and clinicians. Develops and maintains relationships with key stakeholders to ensure effective collaboration and buy-in.
  • Compliance and Governance: Ensures compliance with Responsible AI guidelines in the development and deployment of machine learning models. Promotes fairness, transparency, and accountability in all aspects of machine learning initiatives.

The expected hiring range for the Head of Machine Learning is $175k-210k, depending on skills, experience, education, and training; relevant licensure / certifications; performance history; and work location. The bonus target for this position is 25% respectfully. The current full salary range for the Head of Machine Learning is $165k Low/ $207k MRP / $270k High
