JOB PURPOSE:

This series of job classifications describes positions in which employees perform a variety of locksmith duties including installation and record maintenance of master keying systems, locksmith work on individual lock problems, as well as additional similar duties as required. They also provide a variety of services relating to building hardware, electronic door closures or door checks, and on-line or stand-alone electronic access locks. There are two levels in the series: Locksmith, Maintenance and Locksmith, Master. They are differentiated on the basis of the experience and expertise required to perform the work, and the range of responsibilities inherent in the position. In addition to regular locksmith duties, the Master Locksmith is responsible for extensive planning and record-keeping activities associated with master keying systems.

In addition to the duties performed by Maintenance Locksmiths, employees at this level plan, execute and record master keying systems. They provide advice concerning lock security and a variety of services relating to building hardware. They must be well informed on the latest techniques in the locksmith trade and perform all locksmith duties with skill and expertise and according to industry and Stanford standards. Working from work orders provided by the planner scheduler, the Master Locksmith determines priorities and schedules the work. The work may be spot-checked by the technical advisor, lead or supervisor upon completion. Master Locksmiths may coordinate the work of regularly employed Locksmiths and any additional staff assigned to assist during peak periods. Master Locksmiths assign work, check completed assignments and train apprentices in the fundamentals of locksmithing.

CORE DUTIES*:

Plan masterkeying systems for buildings and departments after conferring with user personnel to determine their requirements; submit estimates of cost of the job as required.

  • Conduct security surveys of installations and recommend to the supervisor the adequacy of security.

  • Draft key control systems for individual departments when required.

  • Select, requisition, install, maintain and repair all locking devices, door checks and door closers, panic hardware and exit alarms.

  • May coordinate contracts with locksmith contractor; provide or approve master key plan, inspect work upon completion.

  • Determine the key requirements of departments and furnish keys.
  • Open or bypass locks when keys are not available.

  • Change lock combinations; tool parts used in repairing old or antique locks.

    Maintain stock control of key blanks, locks and repair parts.

  • Repair and maintain all locksmith machines.

  • May perform any of the duties described in the Locksmith, Maintenance specification or other duties as assigned.

  • May conduct electronic access maintenance and repair.

  • Adhere to safety rules.

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Education & Experience:

    Journey level knowledge equivalent to four years completion in an apprentice program or a combination of equivalent education and work experience. Four years of actual work in the locksmith trade.

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Skilled in the use of the tools, equipment and methods of the locksmith trade and carpentry skills required to install doors needed for access.

  • Knowledgeable in keying systems and building and document security systems.

  • Demonstrated strong communication skills (both verbal and written)

    Certifications and Licenses:

    Must possess and maintain a valid California Non-commercial Class C Driver's license.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    Ability to obtain and maintain a California Non-commercial Class C license.

    Constantly stand/walk

    Frequently kneel/crawl, climb, light/fine and forcefully grasping of tools, use telephone and operate foot and/or hand controls

    Occasionally work seated, twist/bend/stoop/squat, reach/work above shoulders, write by hand, and scrub/sweep

    Rarely perform desk-based computer tasks, sort/file paperwork or parts and operate a manual pipette

    Lift/carry/push/pull objects that frequently weight up to 10 pounds and occasionally up to 40 pounds

    Visual acuity required to work with color coded wiring

    Rarely use a lift to access devices

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    May be required to work overtime, evenings and weekends, including holidays, sometimes in inclement weather conditions.

    Frequently work at heights up to 10 feet; rarely greater than 10 feet.

    Occasionally exposed to high voltage electricity.

    Required to wear appropriate uniform.

    Required to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
