Purpose of Position

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of North Dakota invites applications for a 12-month Open Rank Teaching Professor to support the Aerospace Engineering program. Depending on the successful candidate's qualifications, the position will be offered at the rank of Teaching Assistant Professor, Teaching Associate Professor, or Teaching Professor.

The department will consider applications in the general area of aerospace engineering, such as (1) altitude determination and control, (2) aerospace systems reliability, (3) orbital mechanics, (4) space structures

The appointment is expected to begin on January 1, 2025, or earlier. Salary and rank will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Duties & Responsibilities

• The successful applicant must have a demonstrated dedication to excellence in engineering education. The successful applicant will have excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal skills. The successful applicant will have the following primary responsibilities and duties:
  • Develop & teach astronautical engineering courses with these topics in sufficient depth for engineering practice (1) orbital mechanics, (2) space environment, (3) attitude determination and control, (4) telecommunications, (5) space structures, and/or (6) rocket propulsion
  • Teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in aerospace engineering, both on-campus and online, including both classroom and laboratory settings
  • Perform tasks for Aerospace Engineering program ABET accreditation
  • Conduct annual academic program evaluations for Aerospace Engineering program(s)
  • Function as Aerospace Engineering program(s) liaison with the aerospace industry to cultivate internship and co-op opportunities for students
  • Collaborate with CEM on outreach events
  • Collaborate in research with projects related to the Aerospace Engineering program and CEM National Security Initiatives
  • Function as subject matter expert in the area of aerospace engineering systems
  • Advising students in course planning and fulfilling graduation requirements.
  • Communicating effectively in the English language with students, families, faculty, staff, and other professional colleagues in person and at a distance

Required Competencies

• Broad knowledge of emerging aerospace engineering needs
• Broad knowledge of academic and commercial development relevant to aerospace engineering
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, including evidence of the ability to teach, inspire, and mentor students
• Effective interpersonal skills, including the ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students
• Ability to work with and engage diverse students and colleagues within and outside the College of Engineering and Mines
• Ability to adapt to current methods of teaching, including online delivery
• Proven ability to operate effectively as a team player and leader who works effectively with superiors, peers, and subordinates and has strong interpersonal skills, and independent judgment

Minimum Requirements

• PhD degree in aerospace engineering or a closely related discipline
• Experience in aerospace engineering areas
• Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience in teaching these astronautical engineering curricular topics in sufficient depth for engineering practice: (1) orbital mechanics, (2) space environment, (3) attitude determination and control, (4) telecommunications, (5) space structures, and/or (6) rocket propulsion
• Industry, government, or research experience in aerospace engineering
• Attained a professional engineering licensure
