Job Description

We are seeking a highly skilled and innovative physicist with expertise in mechanical and optical design to join our Advanced Technology team in the Chemical Analysis Division of Thermo Fisher. As an Optomechanical Design Specialist, you will devise new systems for Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and associated microscopies. Your strong background in these subject areas will drive innovation in optics, imaging, photonics, and precision instrumentation.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and optimize optomechanical spectroscopy and microscopy systems.
  • Apply computer-aided design software and optical simulations for design evaluation.
  • Conduct structural and thermal analysis to ensure the mechanical integrity and stability.
  • Innovate with interdisciplinary teams to integrate optomechanical systems into new products.
  • Conduct experiments to validate designs, collect data, and analyze results.
  • Stay up-to-date with advancements in mechanical and optical design.
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance to colleagues and team members.
  • Participate in the documentation and reporting of design specifications, test results, and project progress.
  • Intellectual property protection through patents.
How will you get there?
  • Master's Degree in physical science (physics, engineering, computer science) or equivalent.
  • Good grasp of mechanical engineering, optics, and physics.
  • Experience with FT-IR, laser optics, imaging optics, and materials science.
  • Able to work in a lab-based research environment, including use of scientific instrumentation along with data analysis skills using Python (strongly preferred) or similar.
  • Experience with embedded systems and C programming for control systems and data acquisition.
  • Able to handle and organize large volumes of electronic data, information, and spectra. Passion for data collection and analysis.
  • Preferred to have experience with SolidWorks, including FEA, motion, and thermal simulations.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Track record of publishing research in reputable scientific journals is preferred.
  • Experience in patent applications and intellectual property protection is a plus.
