The University of Miami UMHC-Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Pharmacy Compounding Room Supervisor.

Summary:

The Pharmacy Compounding Coordinator will be responsible for providing safe pharmaceutical preparations to patients through compliance with USP797, USP 800 and USP 795 regulations as well as any applicable state Board of Pharmacy regulations. This includes ensuring proper airflow in ISO classified areas, verifying products used meet USP requirements for sterile compounding, and confirming devices are working according to manufacturer specifications. The coordinator completes routine environmental sampling of all devices and rooms, coordinates semi-annual recertification with an outside entity, conducts new employee training, writes and reviews sterile compounding procedures, and supervises annual written and didactic competency testing with all employees who engage in sterile compounding. Training and education is provided to technicians and pharmacists at initial hire, on an semi-annual basis, and as needed. Further staffing duties are required to ensure adequate staffing levels, conduct training and education of new employees, and develop policies and procedures that both fit the workflow and meet facility requirements.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides comprehensive and individualized compounding services on behalf of patients

  • Educates staff to ensure their understanding and compliance with all USP 797, USP 800 and any Florida State Board of Pharmacy regulations

  • Ensures compliance with hospital administration workflow expectations

  • Provides in-services and educates pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff and trainees on evidence-based best practice and stewardship

  • Contributes to the development, maintenance, and management of medication related compounding guidelines

  • Continuously identifies service-related issues which require evaluation and facilitates quality improvement initiatives as needed to ensure regulatory compliance and advance practice

  • Participates in Pharmacy and collaborative departmental subcommittees, including but not limited to UHealth Compounding Committee

  • Drug shortages are frequent, and the coordinator will spend a great deal of time working to discover ways the facility can safely mitigate the impact of these shortages on patient care.

  • Working closely with the purchasing department and being a member of various pharmacy organizations can help the coordinator be proactive rather than reactive.

  • The ability to quickly and efficiently research answers to problems and questions is vital. The coordinator will be required to find information on a variety of topics. Understanding the key terms frequently used in the industry will help in this process

  • Serves as preceptor for and maintains active involvement in the pharmacy academic programs including precepting residents and pharmacy students Involvement in external presentations, publications, and professional organizations is strongly encouraged

Outcome Measures:

  • Increase compliance of required cleaning activities to 100% every month

  • Ensure compliance with hospital medication turnaround time

  • Pass semi-annual recertification for all devices and rooms

  • Reform practices and procedures to meet USP regulations and industry best practices

  • Successful implementation of USP Chapters 795/797/800.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Requires current licensure in good standing in the State of Florida and a degree in Pharmacy from an accredited College of Pharmacy.

  • PharmD is required; consideration will be given to all candidates who have been grandfathered by the state of Florida to keep their licenses active/current if obtained before the changes to the Pharmacists' licenses (PharmD requirement) took place, this also includes candidates from other countries that have obtained a Florida license.

  • Board Certification in Sterile Compounding preferred.
