1. Performs proper specimen collection from patients of all age groups, by confirming patient ID, collecting specimens in proper tubes utilizing venipuncture/capillary techniques, and accurately labeling the specimens to ensure accurate patient results.
o Demonstrates proper technique to provide standard of care. This includes selecting the appropriate equipment prior to collection; i.e. tubes, supplies, verifying orders, proper patient preparation (site selection, order of draw), proper technique, following standard precautions and proper disposal of supplies according to facility policy.
o Demonstrates knowledge of special procedures i.e. Lactic Acid, Legal Alcohol, Genetic testing, Pathology specimen preparation and specialty lab requests etc.
o Maintains current knowledge of methods for blood, urine, stool, fluid and culture collections and explains specimen collection protocols to patients, nurses and physicians as required.
o Participates in annual skills review by reviewing age appropriate competencies and receiving evaluation of technique by direct observation.
o Compares specimen label and/or requisition to patient ID band prior to collection.
o Properly labels specimens attaching the correct label to the correct tube after collection.
o Uses handheld device on all inpatients and verbally confirms 2 patient identifiers (full name and date of birth) with all outpatients prior to collection and after collection.
2. Performs phlebotomy duties accurately and efficiently.
o Completes specimen collection (routine draws within 5 minutes) in a timely manner without affecting quality or integrity of sample.
o Demonstrates organizational skills by prioritizing collection requests and reconciling the pending list and properly processing STAT specimens.
o Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no supervision; regularly helps others when assigned work is complete.
o Returns specimens to the lab so that established TAT's can be met.
o Selects appropriate equipment prior to collection; i.e. tubes, supplies, needles etc.
o Verifies orders prior to collection per department policy.
3. Manages specimen accessioning accurately and efficiently to provide quality specimens for laboratory testing.
o Prioritizes Stats, Routine and blue bag specimens as they arrive in the lab and handles workload accurately and efficiently.
o Evaluates specimen for acceptability per policy (volume, labeling, proper documentation for QA)
o Handles 24 hour urine container preparation and receipt (i.e. verify collection technique, total volume, correct preservative as per facility policy.)
o Receives specimens accurately in the LIS: performs Clinical Order Entry correctly, resolves compliance issues by contacting the ordering physician or by completing a problem form.
o Completes Add-on requests according to facility policy.
o Processes specimen drop off from outside facilities according to departmental protocol (i.e. WHP clients, NorDx etc)
4. Provides customer service by answering broad technical questions, and directing others to appropriate resources.
o Performs clerical duties accurately and efficiently including accurate and timely specimen accessioning, utilizing appropriate resources (i.e. reference lab manual, standard operating procedures, etc.)
o Accurately enters billing and registration information as is applies to facility.
o Demonstrates ability to operate office equipment (copier, phone, fax, etc.)
o Demonstrates clear verbal and written communication.
o Demonstrates proper phone etiquette.

Qualifications
Experience Minimum Required
• Successful completion of Phlebotomy training.
Experience Preferred/Desired
• 40 hours of internship.
• Previous 1 year Phlebotomy experience.
Education Minimum Required
• H.S. diploma or equivalent
Education Preferred/Desired
• Completion of a Phlebotomy certification class; or completion of accredited course; or military trained, or on the job training.
Special Skills Minimum Required
• Familiar with computer, office equipment, organizational and team skills.
Special Skills Preferred/Desired
Experience with Laboratory Information Systems.
