Position Summary:

Cancer is a common diagnosis in the emergency department (ED) and by the time patients reach the ED, their cancer has often progressed to later stages. EDs are not intended to diagnose cancer. However, across different cancer types, the burden and risk factors of cancer diagnosis as an emergency have not been studied extensively in U.S. populations. Our NCI-funded project (R01CA264176) aims to describe the burden of cancer diagnosis in the ED, estimate the relative importance of ED diagnosis on patient survival, and investigate modifiable drivers of disparities that may result in some patients being disproportionately affected by diagnosis in the ED. Under the direct supervision of Dr. Caroline Thompson (Associate Professor of Cancer Epidemiology; caroline.thompson@unc.edu), the postdoctoral research associate will support the generation and communication of scientific findings from the project. The duties of the fellow will include: attending team meetings, performing literature reviews, statistical analysis, and preparation of scientific abstracts and writing manuscripts, and help with supervision of graduate students. Mentorship and career development opportunities will be emphasized; first authorship is expected, and the incumbent will be encouraged and supported to pursue their own grant funded research ideas.
