Department of Neurology

With more than 100 clinical and research faculty, the department provides the most advanced neurological care in the region and has contributed to the development of cutting-edge advances in the understanding of neurological disorders and its treatments. The department's clinical advances are recognized by U.S. News and World Report, ranking UHealth's performance in Neurology and Neurosurgery as #20 in the country. With dedicated Discovery Neuroscience laboratories, and large clinical research initiatives, the department is a top recipient of NIH funding (ranked 14th in the nation). Additionally, the department's focus on professional education ranks their residency program in the top 10% neurology training programs and one of the largest in the country with 45 residents and 23 fellows.

Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Lead the development and implementation of strategic planning and new initiatives to enhance the department's portfolio of clinical, academic, and research programs, while maximizing and building upon existing infrastructure.
    • Spearhead advancement and innovation in clinical care through collaboration with other disciplines that can be translated into progressive, patient-centered treatments and clinical care of neurological diseases and related conditions.
  • Lead integration and coordination of all clinical services and programs among the affiliated hospitals and clinics.
  • Prioritize enhancement of a culture of inclusion, diversity and equity and promote cultural competence within all aspects of the department and the institution.
  • Mentor, invest in and develop faculty and staff to foster a collaborative and supportive environment.
  • Provide strategic leadership for and collaboration with all neurology services, including its subspecialties.
  • Recruit, retain and develop excellent faculty, principal investigators and administrative staff representing the diversity of talent available in neurology, and support them in their local, regional, and national leadership positions, and/or professional development opportunities.
  • Provide vision for how to manage and care for the complex neurological challenges of the people of South Florida.
  • Promote outstanding clinical care that is of value to the community by ensuring the delivery of timely and high-quality care that is compassionate, evidence-based, and safe.
  • Assure delivery of outstanding education while advancing the knowledge and professional growth of medical students, residents and fellows, as well as technologists, nurses, advanced practice providers, clinical research coordinators and support and administrative staff.
  • Provide leadership and oversight for education and training, including the residency and fellowship programs, medical student rotations, and graduate student programs within the department.
  • Recruit top tier residents and fellows who also want to contribute to a culture of respect, inclusion, and the advancement of the department's academic missions.
  • Together with the Dean of the Miller School and department faculty, define and lead the department's research strategy to drive innovation in neurologic care and delivery, assisting the faculty in achieving their research missions.
  • Assure equitable salary and academic working conditions for department faculty to facilitate their continuing professional development

Qualifications:

The successful candidate must be board certified in Neurology, be eligible for licensure in the State of Florida and for appointment at the rank of professor. They must have a distinguished record in one or more areas of research, teaching, clinical care and administration. Candidates who have prior experience in a multi-disciplinary setting, have demonstrated leadership and management competencies, and are nationally recognized in one or more of the areas of Neurology will be viewed most favorably. The candidate will be known as an excellent communicator with strong clinical credibility to foster an outstanding Neurology enterprise.

Candidates will have extensive experience in an academic medical school setting and be considered an outstanding educator with a distinguished clinical and/or research career. This person must have a proven track record of leadership in the academic setting, and successful programmatic developments in medical and health science education. The candidate will possess both managerial and administrative skills to achieve UHealth's goals while balancing the resources and financial budget.

Strong communication, listening and interpersonal skills are of the utmost importance and will play a major factor in the selection of the successful candidate. In addition to being an effective leader and decision maker, the candidate will be a team player. Candidates will be viewed as energetic, engaging, entrepreneurial and motivating. The candidate will be seen as a strategic and visionary thinker. Additionally, candidates will have a strong proponent of collaboration and interdisciplinary alliances both internally and externally to UHealth.
