Primary Role

This role is responsible for the State source water protection program and functional coordination between Engineering, Water Quality and Environmental Management teams, with regard to chemical toxicity, hazard assessment, pollution prevention and remediation.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide technical expertise to the business on Water Quality and Environmental issues related to Source Water Protection.
  • Assess the probability, or likelihood, that particular chemicals, processes or situations present a significant risk to human health and/or the environment.
  • Evaluate significance of hazards and determine proper disposal and management methods.
  • Collaborate with environmental scientists, planners, hazardous waste technicians, engineers and other specialists, and experts in law and business regarding any environmental concerns.
  • Provide technical support for environmental remediation and litigation projects and monitor progress of environmental improvement programs.
  • Review publications and literature available, material safety data sheets (MSDS), spill contingency plans and other documents publicly available pertaining to operational effectiveness and environmental compliance.
  • Maintain working relationships with agencies and community organizations
  • Obtain, update and maintain plans, permits and standard operating procedures.
  • Provide support during Water Quality and Environmental emergencies as needed.

Knowledge/Skills

  • Working knowledge of science, theory and application of water/wastewater treatment and operations, water quality monitoring and quality assurance programs.
  • Working knowledge in toxicology-understanding harmful effects of chemicals on living organisms (determining the likelihood that harmful effects will occur under certain exposure circumstances, sometimes called "risk assessment.")
  • Working Knowledge of water quality and environmental regulations affecting the business.
  • Must possess good communication skills, good written and verbal communication skills (e.g., fluency in report writing and presentations).
  • Effective people management skills (e.g., planning, organizing, recruiting, controlling, and leading individual staff and teams).
  • Effective interpersonal skills (e.g., persuasion, negotiation, listening, cooperation, tact, diplomacy, problem solving, internal consulting).
  • Must be able to work in an agile, fast paced, and dynamic environment and be comfortable with constant change.
  • Ability to interpret scientific reports and documents such as MSDS sheets and communicate technical information.

Experience/Education

  • A minimum of 7 years of experience required in environmental management, project planning, or comparable public programs.
  • Experience working in a matrixed organization and managing processes, technologies, and budgets. in a matrixed organization and managing processes, technologies, and budgets.
  • Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Engineering or equivalent, Master's degree in related field will be a plus.

Certifications & Licenses

  • Water and/or waste license, professional engineer certification a plus.

Hours/Schedule

  • Full-time
  • Monday-Friday, daylight hours
  • On-call responsibility as needed

Work Environment

  • Normal office environment with occasional field work.

Travel Requirements

  • Periodic travel, up to 15%.
