The Programs Executive Underwriter assumes responsibility for assigned lines of coverage to include providing direction and oversight for the Programs Underwriters and for selecting and pricing business written within MMA's Programs division. This includes developing productive relationships with retail producers that will result in the sustained growth and profitability as identified by department goals. This individual will oversee underwriting files, applications and submission, problem resolution, and monitor loss trends. In addition, they will effectively interact with our insurance carrier and vendor partners to assure smooth operations of the Programs division; and consistently apply and recommend updates for Program underwriting guidelines.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities

  • Oversee underwriting process for assigned lines of coverage.
    • Assign applications for completion and review for required information prior to submission.
    • Consistently apply program underwriting guidelines, making recommendations when appropriate.
    • Develop and review appropriate risk pricing.
    • Interact with insurance carrier partners and producers.
    • Ensure file maintenance and systems integrity including; design, creation, and documentation to meet departmental data and reporting requirements.
  • Service existing assigned lines of coverage ensuring that client expectations are being met.
    • Receive and delegate policy service requests.
    • Advise team, if needed, in resolving routine client concerns. Investigate any reoccurring and non-routine client and carrier concerns and bring to a successful and timely resolution.
    • Provide direction and oversight to the team in adhering to loss control protocols as outlined in the underwriting guidelines taking action as needed.
  • Monitor lines of coverage performance and initiate corrective actions.
    • Monitor loss results and collaborate with the Director of Underwriting on corrective actions taken.
    • Identify and recommend changes required in program underwriting pricing.
    • Research, coordinate and implement vendor services providing performance feedback, as needed.
  • Collaborate with Production Executives and assist in soliciting new business opportunities which meet the various programs' criteria.
    • Develop effective relationships with Production Executives, retail agents and carrier partners.
    • Effectively pursue desirable Programs business by attending industry association events, trade shows and promoting Programs visibility in industry niches.
    • Attend and lead the presentation of program proposals.
    • Assist in leading the team towards achieving targeted profitability and production goals.

  • Act as Mentor within the Programs department.
    • Regularly coach Underwriters by providing timely and accurate feedback on an ongoing basis, and formally when working with the Director of Underwriting to deliver the annual performance review.
    • Provide input and participate in annual reviews.
    • Monitor the workload of associates for assigned lines of coverage to including assignment/re-assignment of work as needed.
    • Monitor training of new Underwriter associates in coordination with the Director of Programs Underwriting.
    • Advise the Director of Underwriting of attendance and performance related issues as they arise.
Education and/or Experience

Successful candidate will be a service oriented individual with high personal standards and a hands-on work style. This position requires an individual who is analytical and comfortable working at a varying pace, managing multiple tasks and deadlines simultaneously, adjusting priorities often, and managing frequent interruptions.

This position interacts with and provides service to a large group of internal associates and has high levels of contact with external vendors. The Programs Executive Underwriter must be positive and approachable, and work effectively with diverse personalities. In addition, the following is required unless otherwise noted:
  • Bachelor's degree preferred with a minimum of 6 years work experience managing projects and analyzing data with progressively greater responsibility for making administrative and procedural decisions and judgments.
  • Highly proficient with personal computer and MS Office (particularly Excel) required.
  • Effective organizational skills and proven ability to balance multiple assignments.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to provide non-technical explanations to technical matters, and summarize and present information in a clear, concise and accurate written and verbal format.
  • Ability to exercise judgment and initiative within established guidelines.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Property & Casualty license.
  • Advanced insurance designations applicable to the above duties strongly preferred as well as a willingness to pursue continuing education and professional development.
  • Maintain a valid Drivers License and reliable transportation.
Work Environment & Physical Demands
  • Ability to use computer keyboard and sit in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Work is performed in a typical interior/office work environment.
  • 15% - 30% travel may be required. Travel consists of 1 - 2 overnight trips per year covering areas both in and out of state.
  • Extended work hours (10 - 12 hrs/day) required on occasion due to attendance and participation at networking and industry functions that begin well before the workday, and may extend well into the evening.

The applicable base salary range for this role is $103,730 to $165,880. The base pay offered will be determined on factors such as experience, skills, training, location, certifications, and education. Decisions will be determined on a case-by-case basis. In addition to the base salary, this position may be eligible for performance-based incentives.
