The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign seeks applicants for the position of full-time Research Scientist. The Research Scientist will contribute to the development and execution of research projects by initiating and leading projects in smart mobility, sustainability, and pavement engineering, preparing, and contributing to proposals, technical reports, and publications proposals, and assisting with management of research group activities.

This position is located at the Illinois Center for Transportation (ICT) in Rantoul, IL. ICT is located on Rantoul's former Chanute Air Force Base and the future site of the 230+ acre Illinois Autonomous and Connected Track (I-ACT). I-ACT is a key component of ICT's ongoing expansion that leads the rapidly growing field of smart mobility. To learn more, please visit us online at ict.illinois.edu .

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with planning of the "Illinois Autonomous and Connected Track (I-ACT)"
  • Lead project coordination of mobility and related projects
  • Represent I-ACT planning team and be a liaison to private industry, public agencies, government, and academic partners.
  • Participate in working groups for the funding campaign of I-ACT
  • Attend meetings, workshops, and conferences to share I-ACT planning updates to key stakeholders and establish new connections of potential partners and collaborators.
  • Manage and create marketing materials, letters of support / request, and presentation materials.
  • Manage stakeholder list and meeting notes database to prioritize key stakeholders, partners, and collaborators.
  • Manage seed research projects.
  • Work directly with ICT Director for other I-ACT related planning duties.
  • Lead/assist research projects on topics such as sustainable and resilient pavements.
  • Manage research groups at ICT
  • Propose testing plans for research projects.
  • Spearhead annual research allocation proposal for the Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) supercomputing resources.
  • Work closely with students to analyze and interpret data.
  • Prepare proposals
  • Conduct comprehensive reviews of technical literature to identify knowledge gaps and research needs.
  • Formulate research tasks, including detailed deliverables, timelines, allocation of personnel and equipment, and required resources.
  • Estimate budgets and prepare project timelines.
  • Coordinate with collaborators on proposal revisions, submissions, and execution.
  • Assume additional appropriate related research scientist duties to further the mission of ICT
  • Draft and revise final reports for research projects and write peer-reviewed journal and conference papers based on research findings.
  • Present at meetings with sponsors, discuss research findings, follow-up on remaining tasks, and future research areas.
  • Work closely with research partners to identify needs and propose sound solutions.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. degree in Civil and Environmental Engineering or closely related field, with a focus on mobility and sustainable transportation.
  • Familiarity with topics related to advanced mobility and infrastructure.
  • Post-doctoral or researcher experience in related research.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience working with faculty and students in an academic setting.
  • Experience in proposal writing.
  • Experience in project leadership and coordination.
  • Experience in writing professional reports and research papers with minimal supervision.
  • Strong record of peer-reviewed publications.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrate excellent communication and organization skills.
  • Ability to handle multiple duties simultaneously.
  • Demonstrate ability to lead a team of graduate students with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information.
APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

This is a full-time academic professional position appointed on a 12-month service basis. The expected start date is as soon as possible after the closing date. Applicants may be interviewed before the closing date; however, no hiring decision will be made until after that date. The budgeted salary range for this position is $60,000 - $85,000. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience, while also considering internal equity. Employees hired into this position will be expected to work onsite on a full-time basis in Rantoul, IL. Sponsorship for work authorization is not available for this position.
