About the Staff RN Role and Kidney Transplant Surgical Dept

The MGH Kidney Transplant Surgical Department includes a multidisciplinary team of surgeons, nephrologists, renal APPs, surgical dialysis access RNs, transplant RN coordinators, social workers, pharmacists, financial coordinators, and patient service coordinators who provide dialysis access and kidney transplant surgery to patients with chronic kidney disease.

Staff RNs maintain accurate, detailed reports, and records. Administer medications to patients and monitor patients for reactions or side effects. Record patients' medical information and vital signs. Monitor, record, and report symptoms or changes in patients' conditions. Consult and coordinate with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, or evaluate patient care plans. Modify patient treatment plans as indicated by patients' responses and conditions. Performs other duties as assigned Complies with all policies and standards.

Competencies:

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of nursing, renal diseases that lead to dialysis, and dialysis modalities.
  • Ability to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care in a holistic manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with compassion, empathy and respect to diverse populations using verbal, written and electronic methods.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently within a multidisciplinary team including surgeons, nephrologists/Renal APP, dialysis access RNs, and interventional radiologists. Ability to communicate a plan with local nephrologists and dialysis facilities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records of all surgical dialysis access events including documenting surgical plan and post-operative care and complications.
  • Ability to educate patients and their support regarding surgical options, postoperative complications, and post-operative care.
  • Ability to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills to prioritize, organize and manage multiple complex clinical and logistical issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to use computer software applications such as electronic health records, databases, and spreadsheets


Qualifications
Skills and Experience:
  • At least 5 years of dialysis experience, preferred.
  • Excellent organization skills
  • Capable of functioning independently
  • Outstanding communication skills
Education/Degree:
  • Associate's degree, Nursing, required.
  • Bachelor's Degree, Nursing, preferred.
Licensure, Certifications, or Registration:
  • MA Registered Nurse license, required.
