SUMMARY:

As an integral contributor to the Office of Admission, the Sr. Assistant/Assistant Director of Admission for Diversity, Access and Outreach is responsible for recruitment, selection and enrollment of a talented incoming class from different backgrounds and lived experiences, and the successful management of community-based organizations and school network partnerships and their processes which support the Admission Office's, goals and recruitment efforts. As part of a team, the Sr. Assistant/Assistant Director will support programs, projects and initiatives focused on recruiting historically underrepresented students to the University, and will play a role, both in implementation and advisory, of prospective and admitted student programs that highlight the experiences of underrepresented students at the University. The Sr. Assistant/Assistant Director manages all aspects of recruitment within an assigned geographic territory, plans, implements, and assesses admission activities and programs, and represents the University to a broad and diverse audience as part of a progressive and highly collaborative team.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Diversity Outreach and Recruitment

  • In collaboration with the Director of Admission for Diversity, Access and Outreach plan, implement, and coordinate initiatives associated with the recruitment of underrepresented student students to the University.
  • Serve as a Lead and primary contact for community-based and partnership organizations. Build and cultivate relationships and maintain contact with official partner organizations to support University mission and goals. Responsible for the annual review of community-based and partnership organization MoUs and communication associated with MoU updates and/or renewals. In collaboration with the Director of Admission and University Legal Counsel to ensure that MoUs align with University mission and goals and are legally compliant.
  • In collaboration with Visit Experience team contact, contribute to the planning and implementation of community-based and partnership organizations group campus visits.
  • Serve as Admission team Lead and content expert regarding community-based and partnership organizations and advise Territory Managers on how to cultivate and build productive relationships that support enrollment goals. Additionally, establish expertise in how community-based and partnership organization data flows through admission CRM
  • Contribute to the assessment of data related to the recruitment of students from underrepresented populations and take a proactive approach as it relates to trends and changes that impact student's progression through the application cycle.
  • Assist with recruitment, hiring and training student employees who support Admission programming.
  • Establish and cultivate relationships with faculty and staff who support the recruitment of underrepresented students.
Prospect Management Responsibilities and General Recruitment Activities
  • Establish short- and long-range prospect management goals and action plans for assigned territory, both international and domestic. Develop and implement strategies and tactics to identify and strengthen potential prospective engagement and interest in assigned territory.
  • Develop expertise for designated geographic territory using data to determine the recruitment goals and strategies for the region.
  • Utilize relational databases to facilitate and assess recruitment activities. Annually review, revise and develop year-end reports for regional prospect management and recruitment activities.
  • Determine the recruitment and yield activities that are most effective for each market sector and develop a plan with justifications for selected activities; manage the travel budget for expenditures associated with off-campus recruitment and yield activities.
  • Plan and implement admission activities related to the recruitment and yielding of prospective students, including planning all travel logistical arrangements and coordinating high school visits, regional receptions, counselor workshops and/or off-campus interviews.
  • Build relationships with prospective students and serve as the primary point of contact for designated geographic territory.
  • Counsel students to determine the students' educational interests and needs and align those interests and needs with the attributes and strengths of the University.
  • Cultivate and sustain collaborative relationships with secondary school counselors, independent counselors, foundational officers, and community-based counselors to encourage top prospects to consider Richmond as a first choice. Sustain long-term productive contact with these constituencies throughout the enrollment cycle through various outreach channels.
  • Serve as a representative of the University to a wide and diverse audience at on- and off-campus events, including college fairs, high school visits, information sessions, regional receptions, and other programs. Create and deliver informative and compelling messages that address the educational needs of various constituents, including students, parents and guardians, community partners, and high school counselors. Develop and innovate new presentation concepts and ideas as appropriate for evolving audiences.
  • Review in a holistic manner first year and transfer applications and prepare applications for presentation to the Admission Committee and/or Merit Scholarship Committee.
  • Serve on an Admission Committee, which determines admission decisions and recommendations for scholarship consideration in cooperation with other colleagues in Admission Committee. Utilize enrollment management software to monitor admission data and decisions and to track and communicate applicant information to prospective students and families.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • A thorough understanding of and appreciation for the selective, private college admission process.
  • Ability to clearly and compellingly articulate the strengths of a private liberal arts education and residential university experience, particularly to those who are not familiar with this model.
  • Demonstrated commitment to supporting access to selective university admission for historically underserved student populations and appreciation for the contributions of these students.
  • Experience in supporting inclusion and a sense of belonging within a diverse community of students, faculty and staff.
  • Knowledge of national student markets and mobility trends, and ability to utilize data to assess, evaluate and validate decisions.
  • Highly self-motivated, highly productive, adaptable, creative and independent critical thinker.
  • Advanced problem-solving capabilities, creativity, collaborative and positive attitude and strong work ethic.
  • Demonstrated success working collaboratively with various internal and external constituencies.
  • Persuasive oral communication skills, including excellent public speaking skills; strong written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks concurrently coupled with excellent organizational skills and highest standards for accuracy
  • Familiarity with software platforms such as relational database systems.
  • The ability to handle highly confidential information is required.
  • Extensive experience with Microsoft Office products.
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and be able to produce a driving record with a minimum of 3 years of driving history in good standing
  • Must be able to lift boxes of up to 30 pounds.
  • Must be willing and eager to travel up to six weeks each semester
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • A minimum of three years of professional experience (for Assistant Director) and five years of experience (for Senior Assistant Director) in college admission, including responsibilities for domestic recruitment, travel strategy and management, and application review.
  • Previous supervisory experience preferred
  • Fluency or proficiency in second language preferred
WORK HOURS:
  • Full-time, in-person, exempt position
  • Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.; 7.75 hrs./day; 38.75 hrs./week; evening and weekend hours are required
SALARY STRUCTURE:

Assistant Director - Pay Grade 5 (Hiring Range $41,018.00 to $54,350.00 annually)

Senior Assistant Director - Pay Grade 6 (Hiring Range $47,154.00 to $62,483.00 annually)
