Nature of Work

This is responsible work involving program direction, coordination, and implementation at a multipurpose senior activity center for mature adults. This position may report directly to the Senior Center Division Manager and will work at multiple senior center locations

*Please note this position is Grant Funded; PT Hours; with No Benefits. The working hours for this position will be Monday-Friday, 8:30AM-2:00PM, for 27.5 hours per week.

Examples of Duties

  • The position is responsible for supporting the daily operations of a senior activity center, which could include planning, implementing, overseeing, and coordinating health, educational, recreational, and nutrition activities; publicizing center classes and special events and assisting participants with registering for classes and events; and providing information about programs and services to seniors and the general public.
  • Maintains records and performs data collection and data entry to prepare required nutrition and health reports (state and federal government).
  • Recruits, motivates, and gives direction to center volunteers.
  • Responds to walk-in and telephone inquiries about services and makes referral to other Office on Aging programs as necessary.
  • Will be required to attend meetings, trainings, community outreach, and provide coverage as needed at other senior activity centers.
  • Perform duties associated with set-up of the center's meal service program, including recruiting and training nutrition program volunteers, set-up, serving, and clean-up of noon meal.
  • May act as a liaison between senior activity center committees, councils, and other community senior organizations.
  • Provides backup to Senior Center Lead Coordinator as needed.
  • Identifies maintenance/facility problems and contacts appropriate County staff for assistance.
  • May be asked to provide administrative assistance at the main office as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Minimum Qualification Requirements

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    • Basic knowledge of physical and psychological changes associated with aging and the needs and capacities of older adults.
    • Knowledge of senior activity and social interests, and an ability to plan, organize and direct a diversified program of recreational, wellness, education, and socialization activities for older adults.
    • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with others and to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with the general public, seniors, and staff, including at public gatherings.
    • Ability to coordinate, train, and supervise paid staff and volunteers; organize schedules of programs; maintain records and prepare reports.
    • Basic computer skills are required, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite programs and the ability to learn agency-specific computer programs.
    • Ability to learn, interpret, and apply County and departmental rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
    • Work is primarily active or physical in nature with intermittent periods of sitting, walking, and standing. Physical work may include room set-up (stacking chairs, moving tables), and lifting/carrying equipment or supplies associated with kitchen and nutrition program tasks; lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be involved.

    EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

    Completion of a High School Diploma/GED certificate AND four (4) years paid or volunteer experience in human services specifically that included social work, senior center operations, counseling, educational or social services for physically or mentally impaired adults.

    OR

    Associate's degree in gerontology, psychology, recreation, or other human service-related field AND two (2) years paid or volunteer experience in human services specifically that included social work, senior center operations, counseling, educational or social services for physically or mentally impaired adults.


    Note: Additional experience in one of the areas described above may be substituted for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis.

    LICENSE:


    Possession of a valid Class C non-commercial driver's license with no more than three (3) points. Please be advised this position requires a valid driver's license. Your application will not be considered if you fail to include the full driver's license number on the electronic application.

    SAFETY:


    Must comply with all Federal (OSHA), State of Maryland (MOSH), safety regulations and applicable Harford County safety policies, procedures, or manual as required for this position.

    FRINGE BENEFITS

    ANNUAL LEAVE - Begin accruing first day of employment and cannot be taken until successful completion of probationary period, EXCESS of 40 DAYS [320 hours] will be deposited into an 106 Premium Reimbursement Account.

    0 months - 3 years 1 day per month (12 days per year)
    4 years - 9 years 1 ¼ days per month (15 days per year)
    10 years - 15 years 1 ¾ days per month (21 days per year)
    Over 15 years 2 days per month (24 days per year)

    SICK LEAVE - Begin accruing first day of employment (UMLIMITED ACCUMULATION)

    1 day is allowed after first month of employment
    1 ¼ days per month accumulation

    PERSONAL LEAVE - For new employees, personal leave is prorated according to schedule below, for the first year only. Any employee on board as of December 31st of each year automatically receives 8 days as of January 1st the following year. (NOTE: Personal Leave may not be taken until successful completion of probationary period; personal leave will be lost if not taken before December 31st of each year.)

    3/1 to 3/31 4 days 6/1 to 6/30 1 day
    7/1 to 12/31 0 days
    FAMILY LEAVE - Up to 12 weeks per year

    FUNERAL LEAVE - 3 days + 1 day for extended travel

    MILITARY LEAVE - 3 weeks per year with no loss in pay for Reserve or National Guard Training, Active Duty and serving during emergencies.

    CIVIL LEAVE - No loss in pay while serving Jury Duty.

    RETIREMENT -
    COUNTY EMPLOYEES: State Pension System 7% employee contribution
    LAW ENFORCEMENT (TO INCLUDE TEMPORARY DEPUTIES): LEOPS 7% Employee Contribution
    CORRECTIONS: SOPP 9% Employee Contribution

    RETIREE HEALTH CARE INSURANCE BENEFITS-
    Employees hired on or after 7/1/2010 will have an automatic Retirement Health Savings account made available as the primary retiree healthcare benefit. This 105(h) Universal Reimbursement Account will only be able to be accessed upon separation of service and/or retirement whichever applicable. These accounts are employer funded, tax free, & portable with 20 different Nationwide investment options.
