Job Summary
The job manages a team of professional staff responsible for programs designed to meet University fundraising goals for contributed income. Manages relationships with alumni, faculty, administrators and organizations with potential to make gifts in support of the University. Develops communication strategies for projects and contributes to the development of larger advancement strategies.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for the cultivation, solicitation, gift closure, and stewardship of prospective donors and donors in a portfolio as well as managing the efforts of direct reports to similarly advance relationships of the individuals, families, and foundations in their portfolios.
- Manages a portfolio of 50-80 donors and prospective donors who are capable of making gifts in the $500K to $10M+ range. Has a personal fundraising goal of $5M+ annually.
- Designs, manages and implements planned giving activities and responsible for gifts of estates, trusts, and various other financial venues that reflect financial planning and deferred giving opportunities.
- Qualifies individuals, rating their capability and likelihood to make a philanthropic gift to MBSD andwisely and judiciously uses the resources of the Research team to augment the identification and qualification of prospective donors.
- Using a Moves Management process, conceives, promotes, and coordinates the interaction of potential and current donors with faculty and other individuals who have the ability to deepen the prospective donor's engagement with the University.
- Conceives, develops, and writes fundraising proposals and in so doing, collaborates with the Individual Giving team and the Development Marketing & Communications team.
- Supervises a team of up to six members.
- As a fundraising leader, they participate in strategic planning and policy decisions as appropriate and will lead a specific initiative that will help the department expand its fundraising efforts in the future.
- Manages a portfolio of current and potential donors. Identifies and cultivates gift prospects and potential donors through events, visits, personalized correspondences, and phone calls.
- Recommends and implements fundraising programs and activities.
- Performs other related work as needed.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.
Work Experience:Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.
Certifications:---Preferred QualificationsExperience:
- A minimum of seven years of experience in development or a related field such as public relations, sales, marketing, or non-profit management.
- Background in planning and managing programs.
- Participation in soliciting and closing major gifts.
- Planned giving experience.
- Proficiency in managing volunteers.
- Understanding of a university setting or a similarly complex institution.
- Supervisory experience.
- Working knowledge with developing and monitoring budgets.
Preferred Competencies
- Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, characterized by the ability to listen, speak, and write well with a strong commitment to customer service.
- Excellent organizational skills, and a high degree of flexibility and initiative.
- Travel and attend evening and weekend functions when necessary.
- Demonstrated skill and knowledge of, or ability to learn quickly, the internal workings of the University.
- Familiarity with The University of Chicago.
