The University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care, is seeking a full-time Senior Pharmacy Technician to join our team. This position provides specialized support to the Ambulatory Surgery Center Pharmacy. Under general supervision of a pharmacist, this role coordinates and performs the technical activities of the pharmacy service area. Under general supervision by a technician supervisor, this position carries out activities associated with training and coordination of Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Technicians, Interns, and other assigned trainees.

Position Responsibilities:

Daily technical functions

a. Provides functional supervision to Pharmacy Technician Trainees, Certified Technicians, and Student Interns and reassigns duties based on workload.

b. Provides feedback to supervisor regarding performance of technicians and other support staff.

c. Coordinates procurement of equipment, inventory, and other supplies as needed.

d. Works on-line performing all required Certified Pharmacy Technician duties that are performed in the area.

Training and Onboarding of Staff

a. Participates in interviewing technician applicants, developing orientation schedules, and onboarding and training of staff.

b. Maintains competency assessments and assists with aseptic technique training of new staff assigned to this area.

Monitors performance and maintenance of pharmacy equipment

a. Monitors operation of assigned equipment and automation (ScriptPro Robot, Compounding equipment. Anesthesia Workstations (AWS), etc.). Performs minor adjustments on equipment and/or initiates request for repair or replacement.

b. Ensures that equipment maintenance is completed and documented.

c. Ensures that only certified personnel are using equipment in a safe and proper manner.

Has a working knowledge of USP < 797> and < 800>

a. Can safely prepare patient specific sterile products using appropriate PPE.

b. Can successfully complete/pass aseptic competencies and didactic test.

Inventory Management

a. Coordinates inventory activities for assigned area including conducting daily and monthly inventories, returning medications to stock, voiding adjudication, and rebilling prescriptions as appropriate.

b. Manages inventory by ordering ahead of need, adjusting pars, monitoring expiration dates, and ensuring proper storage of medications to minimize medication waste.

c. Assists with managing inventory of shortage items by providing notices regarding the shortage to key stakeholders, managing stock levels, and allocating supply as directed and as appropriate.

d. Runs drug usage reports as needed to support medication additions/removals from pharmacy inventory stock.

e. Participates in activities related to medication recalls.

6. Participates in cash collection and reconciliation activities

a. Ensures that third-party pricing billing errors are resolved. Acts as an advisor for any questions regarding communication with patients.

b. Verifies and balances the cash register tapes with funds received.

c. Assists with computer and cash register database maintenance.

Operational Support

a. Provides assistance with the coordination and implementation of new projects.

b. Communicates pertinent updates and disseminates information to area staff.

c. Maintains documents related to pharmacy operations in accordance with hospital policy, state, and federal regulations.

d. Acts as a positive role model. Communicates with clear, positive verbal and written messages to individuals within the department as well as with patients, the general public, and other departments. Fosters teamwork by encouraging and assisting others.

e. Ensures high-quality service and effective communication with internal and external customers.

8. Other

a. Position includes all responsibilities performed by Certified Pharmacy Technicians in the Ambulatory Care Pharmacies.

b. Other duties as assigned.

Pay Level: GC72 https://hr.uiowa.edu/pay/pay-plans/merit-alpha-matrix

Minimum Requirements:

  • Registered with the Pharmacy Board at the time of hire.
  • National certification through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or the National Healthcareer Association (NHA). Must meet ongoing education requirements and maintain certification.
  • High school diploma or the equivalent.
  • Experience
  • Any combination of four years of post-high school experience and/or education in the natural sciences OR
  • Four years of experience as a pharmacy technician

  • Desired Qualifications:
    • Ability to perform ratio/proportion equations
    • Experience with inventory maintenance activities
    • Experience working in team environment
    • Experience working in detail-oriented work environment
    • Knowledge of Windows-based computer programs
    • Experience working in environment requiring high level of accuracy
    • Experience working in healthcare with one-on-one patient interaction & experience handling challenging interactions in work environment
    • Prefer National Career Readiness Certificate at Silver Level
    • One year cleanroom experience with hazardous drug sterile compounding is highly desirable
